Trogon elegans
Elegant Trogon
Family: Trogonidae · Class: Aves · Order: Trogoniformes
The Elegant Trogon is a medium-sized tropical bird recently elevated to full species status in 2025, having been previously considered conspecific with the Coppery-tailed Trogon (Trogon ambiguus). The two species were separated based on differences in song and plumage patterns (Birds of the World 2025). Like other trogons, males display more vibrant coloration than females, though specific morphometric data for this newly recognized species remains limited in the scientific literature. The Elegant Trogon has a restricted range extending from southeastern Guatemala through Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua to northwestern Costa Rica (Birds of the World 2025). This relatively small distribution distinguishes it from its close relative, the Coppery-tailed Trogon, which ranges northward into Mexico and southeastern Arizona. Within its Central American range, the Elegant Trogon occurs sympatrically with nine other trogon species, creating complex identification challenges in the field. Unlike most tropical trogons that prefer humid environments, the Elegant Trogon favors more xeric regions and inhabits dense woodlands, particularly thorn forests, lowland deciduous forests, and gallery forests (Birds of the World 2025). The species also utilizes scrublands and has been documented using shade coffee plantations, demonstrating some adaptability to modified habitats. This habitat preference for drier woodland environments sets it apart from many of its congeners. Detailed behavioral and ecological information for the Elegant Trogon remains limited due to its recent taxonomic recognition and the previous focus on the Coppery-tailed Trogon. Like other trogons, the species likely exhibits the characteristic behavior of perching quietly for extended periods below the canopy before sallying forth to glean insects from foliage or pluck fruits from shrubs. Specific data on breeding biology, clutch size, and seasonal movements have not been well documented for this newly recognized species. The Elegant Trogon currently lacks formal conservation status listings, though habitat loss presents the primary conservation concern. Within its range, forest cover decreased by 8.6% from 2009 to 2020, with a 2.8% loss occurring from 2017 to 2020 alone (Birds of the World 2025). Assuming population levels correlate with forest cover, scientists have inferred a population decline of 1-15% over the past three generations. However, the actual population size remains unknown, creating significant challenges for conservation assessment. The species' limited scientific attention stems partly from its restricted Central American distribution and its previous conspecific status with the better-studied Coppery-tailed Trogon. The Elegant Trogon appears on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Birds of Conservation Concern 2021 list, though this likely reflects historical taxonomic confusion rather than current conservation needs within the United States. Future research priorities include population surveys, detailed habitat requirements assessment, and monitoring of deforestation impacts within its small range. The species' presence in shade coffee plantations suggests potential for conservation strategies that support both biodiversity and sustainable agriculture practices.
