Hoaryleaf ceanothus is a California native shrub found in chaparral habitats at moderate elevations. Flowering from March to May, this plant produces white flowers in compact umbel-like clusters up to 2 centimeters long. Growing as an upright shrub less than 4 meters tall with ascending stems covered in white to rusty-colored felt-like hair, it forms an open, distinctive branching pattern. Its evergreen leaves are opposite, elliptic, with olive-green surfaces above and pale, densely hairy undersides measuring 10 to 25 millimeters long. The distinctive fruits are rounded, 5 to 9 millimeters wide with short 1 to 2 millimeter horns.
