Baker's hawksbeard is a California native perennial herb found in rocky, open mountain areas at elevations above 1,000 meters. Flowering from June to September, this plant produces yellow flowers in clusters with 11 to 40 individual blooms. Growing with one to three erect stems 10 to 30 centimeters tall, the plant has a thick woody taproot and stems that are dark green or reddish and covered in soft, woolly hairs. Its basal leaves are elliptical and deeply divided into widely lanceolate lobes with recurved edges, often featuring reddish-purple midribs and covered in glandular hairs. The fruit is fusiform-shaped, dark brown to yellowish, with 10 to 13 distinct ribs and a dusky or pale yellow-white pappus.
