Baker's hawksbeard is a native perennial found in the Modoc Plateau in dry open places at elevations of 400 to 2,200 meters. Flowering from May to July, this plant produces yellow flowers in heads 7 to 22 millimeters long, with narrow cylindric involucres. Growing with stems 25 to 30 centimeters tall, it forms a compact, upright habit. Its leaves are 15 to 18 centimeters long, shallowly lobed with triangular dentate edges, and nearly smooth on both surfaces. The fruit is 8 millimeters long with a pappus 12 to 13 millimeters in length.
