Dieteria canescens
Hoary-aster, Hoary-Aster
Family: Asteraceae · Type: annual · Native
Hoary-aster is a California native annual herb found in diverse habitats across the state's varied landscapes. Flowering from June to September, this plant produces delicate ray flowers in white, blue, or purple, creating soft clusters of color up to 2 centimeters long. Growing up to 1.2 meters tall with a generally canescent-puberulent texture, it has an open and airy growth habit. Its leaves are linear to oblanceolate, typically 3 to 10 centimeters long and 2 to 6 millimeters wide, with margins that range from nearly entire to lightly toothed or minutely serrate. The plant's distinctive grayish-soft covering and variable flower colors make it a subtle but charming addition to California's wildflower communities.
