One sided monkeyflower is a California native annual found in southern Coast Ranges, southwestern California, and southern Mojave Desert in sandy, shrubby, disturbed areas and streambanks at elevations below 2,100 meters. Flowering from March to June, this plant produces magenta to dark red-purple flowers with yellow throat folds, individually positioned at each node. Growing with slender stems 1 to 20 centimeters tall, the plant has a delicate, compact structure. Its leaves range from 2 to 30 millimeters long, generally narrowly elliptic or obovate, with lower leaves smooth and upper leaves slightly hairy. The calyx is distinctive, swollen with wide ribs and generally tinged red with white hairs, measuring 5 to 14 millimeters long.
