Jaynes canyon buckwheat is a rare (CNPS 2B.3) California native perennial found in the Klamath Ranges of Siskiyou and Trinity counties, growing on serpentine landscapes at elevations of 1,700 to 2,400 meters. Flowering from June to September, this plant produces yellow to brown-yellow flowers in small head-like clusters. Growing as a low mat spreading 3 to 8 meters in diameter, it forms erect stems 10 to 20 centimeters tall with sparse tomentose covering. Its basal leaves are densely gray-tomentose, measuring 5 to 20 millimeters long and 5 to 15 millimeters wide, creating a distinctive silvery appearance. The plant is dioecious, with male and female flowers differing subtly in size and structure.
