Sherwin grade sulphur flower is a California native shrub found in southern Sierra Nevada, Sierra Nevada east, and northwestern Mojave Desert regions in sandy habitats at elevations of 1,600 to 2,600 meters. Flowering from July to September, this plant produces distinctive yellow flowers 3 to 6 millimeters long in clustered umbels. Growing as a compact subshrub 4 to 10 meters tall with a spread of 5 to 12 meters, it features glabrous stems and branches. Its leaves are small and delicate, measuring 0.5 to 2 centimeters long and 0.3 to 1 centimeter wide, with a smooth surface. The plant forms a rounded, dense structure with multiple branching orders and creates an attractive, low-growing presence in its high-elevation sandy habitat.
