Dichotomous rush is a naturalized perennial found in northern California Coast Ranges (Shasta County) in marshes at elevations below 200 meters. The plant produces small flowers with perianth parts 3.3 to 4.5 millimeters long, which are lanceolate and acuminate. Growing in dense tufts 25 to 60 centimeters tall, it features stems with 2 to 6 strong ridges per side and a base that is often pink. Its leaves are soft, narrow, and 0.5 to 1.2 millimeters wide, with leaf sheaths having small rounded appendages. The plant's inflorescence is open, with lower bracts that are leaf-like and typically longer than the flowering branches.
