Juncus falcatus
Falcate rush
Family: Juncaceae · Type: perennial · Native
Falcate rush is a California native perennial found in grassland and coastal prairie habitats. Flowering from May to July, this rush produces small dark flowers with wide scarious margins in small hemispheric clusters of 5 to 25 blossoms. Growing with stiff curved stems 3 to 30 centimeters tall, it develops from a long scaly rhizome with distinctive leaf characteristics. Its leaves are primarily basal, with stiff blades curved toward the stem and often reaching the top of the plant's inflorescence. The fruit is approximately equal to or slightly shorter than the perianth, with a short but obvious beak and a notched tip.
