Penstemon newberryi var. berryi
Berry's mountain pride
Family: Plantaginaceae · Type: shrub · Native
Berry's mountain pride is a California native shrub found in the Klamath Ranges, northern Coast Ranges, and northern Coast Range outer areas on rocky outcrops and talus slopes at elevations of 1,000 to 2,400 meters. Flowering from June to August, this plant produces striking rose-red flowers with a distinctive wide throat and long curly hairs. Growing with a compact form and reduced leaves toward the stem's upper portion, it forms a rugged mountain landscape plant. Its leaves become progressively smaller and less prominent toward the stem's distal end, creating an interesting architectural structure. The flower's rich rose-red corolla measures 27 to 35 millimeters long, with a throat impressively 7.5 to 12 millimeters wide when pressed.
