Penstemon newberryi var. newberryi
Newberry's penstemon
Family: Plantaginaceae · Type: shrub · Native
Newberry's penstemon is a California native shrub found in the Klamath Ranges, High Cascade Range, Sierra Nevada, and northern Tehama County in rocky outcrops and talus slopes at elevations of 1,000 to 3,700 meters. Flowering from June to August, this plant produces striking rose-red flowers with a wide throat and delicate short-hairy floor. Growing with an erect habit and distinctive stem structure, the shrub develops reduced leaves toward the stem's upper portions. Its leaves become progressively smaller along the stem, creating a unique architectural profile. The flower's corolla reaches 20 to 30 millimeters long, with 2 to 4 stamens extending beyond the bloom's surface.
