Pinus ponderosa var. pacifica

Pacific ponderosa pine, Pacific Ponderosa Pine

Family: Pinaceae · Type: shrub · Native

Pacific ponderosa pine is a native conifer found in the North Coast Ranges, Cascade Range, Sierra Nevada, San Francisco Bay Area (Santa Cruz Mountains), Transverse Ranges, and Peninsular Ranges on coastal-draining mountain slopes and streambanks at elevations of 100 to 2,700 meters. Its mature bark displays distinctive light to medium yellow-brown coloration, creating a warm, textured appearance in forest landscapes. Growing with robust, deep green needles 15 to 28 centimeters long that are thin and shiny, this pine develops impressive seed cones 8 to 18 centimeters long that are initially light yellow-green and mature to complex structures with black and brown scales. The needles are characteristically deep green and maintain a persistent sheath, contributing to the tree's dense, architectural form. Its seed cones feature uniquely outcurved prickles on the distal knob, with seeds partially winged and adding to the pine's distinctive reproductive strategy.
