Pyrrocoma hirta var. lanulosa
Tacky goldenweed
Family: Asteraceae · Type: perennial · Native
Tacky goldenweed is a California native perennial found in northern Sierra Nevada and Modoc Plateau in meadows, open forests, and occasionally alkaline soils at elevations of 1,700 to 2,200 meters. Flowering from June to August, this plant produces yellow flowers in heads with overlapping, unequally sized phyllaries. Growing with stems 20 to 50 centimeters tall, it develops a woolly, sparsely glandular habit with soft, dense growth. Its leaves are distinctively woolly, covering the plant in a soft, textured layer that gives the plant its "tacky" character. The plant's unique combination of yellow flowers and woolly foliage makes it a distinctive feature of its high-elevation mountain habitats.
