Pendulous bulrush is a native perennial found in northern California Ranges near Yreka in marshes and wet meadows at elevations below 900 meters. Flowering from June to August, this plant produces brown to red-brown spikelets with green midribs in delicate clusters. Growing as a dense, clustered sedge with short rhizomes and stems 50 to 100 centimeters tall, it has slender stems 0.6 to 3 millimeters in diameter. Its leaf blades are 4 to 8 millimeters wide, with distinctive curled perianth bristles that extend beyond the small fruit. The compact fruit is three-angled and measures 1 to 1.8 millimeters long.
