Water awlwort is a California native annual found in the Sierra Nevada in shallow lake margins, streambanks, wet sedge meadows, and muddy flats at elevations of 1,800 to 3,200 meters. Flowering from July to October, this plant produces small white flowers approximately 1.2 to 1.5 millimeters long with narrow petals. Growing with delicate stems 1.5 to 15 centimeters tall, it forms compact clusters in wet environments. Its leaves are narrowly awl-like, measuring 1 to 7 centimeters in length and tapering to fine points. The fruit is small and obovoid, 2 to 3.5 millimeters long, containing 6 to 12 tiny oblong seeds.
