European frostweed is a naturalized perennial found in northern and central Sierra Nevada foothills and eastern edge of Sacramento Valley in disturbed places at elevations of 80 to 150 meters. Flowering from April to May, this plant produces delicate yellow flowers with distinctive red to purple markings near the base of the petals, approximately 7 to 10 millimeters long. Growing with slender stems 5 to 40 centimeters tall, it displays a low, spreading habit. Its leaves are linear and relatively narrow, measuring 1 to 6 centimeters long, with margins that are slightly rolled under or flat. The plant forms delicate, sparse colonies in open, disturbed ground with a distinctive pale yellow and reddish-purple floral display.
