Chenopodium luteum is a California native found in the Sierra Nevada High and Great Basin bioregions, growing in disturbed sites, meadows, sagebrush scrub, and pine woodland at 2,000 to 3,000 meters elevation. Flowering from July to September, it is an erect plant, single- or multi-stemmed and leafy throughout, reaching 50 to 80 centimeters, with powdery lance-shaped leaves and a distinctive bright yellow fruit wall enclosing a black seed.
