Chenopodium wahlii is a California native found in the Klamath Ranges and Peninsular Ranges bioregions in disturbed sites with unstable rocky substrate at elevations from 2,000 to 2,500 meters. Flowering from July to September, it grows as an erect, many-branched plant 40 to 80 centimeters tall with elliptic to lanceolate, powdery leaves. Its flower clusters form axillary and terminal spikes and panicles, producing small fruits about 1 millimeter in diameter with a horizontal black seed.
