Chenopodium aureum is a California native plant found in the Sierra Nevada High and Great Basin bioregions in sagebrush scrub at elevations of 300 to 3,500 meters. Flowering from July to September, it grows erect to 40 to 50 centimeters tall with sparsely branched stems and trullate to lanceolate leaves that are moderately to densely powdery, producing glossy, light golden fruits about 1.2 millimeters across.
