Chenopodium howellii is a California native growing in the Modoc Plateau bioregion in sagebrush scrub or pine and juniper woodland at elevations from 1,000 to 1,500 meters. Flowering from July to September, it is an erect, many-branched plant reaching 30 to 40 centimeters, with elliptic, powdery leaves and a thick, lens-shaped fruit that is brown with protruding whitish to cream spots.
